IERSD research activities focus on the environment, implementing cutting-edge research and developing services for the State, local government and society. The thematic areas tackled are the Atmospheric Environment, Meteorology and Hydrology, Climate and Climate Change and Energy, which include the impacts of anthropogenic development on the environment, the study of air pollution and its sources, the effects of severe and extreme weather events, vulnerability and risk to natural disasters, water resources management, climate change mitigation and adaptation, renewables and energy performance of buildings.

IERSD develops and provides various operational services such as weather forecasting (www.meteo.gr), with the largest Network of Automatic Stations, as well as services for recording concentrations of basic and specialized pollutants (www.air-quality.gr), among others. Its contribution to the local government includes its consistent support to Municipalities’ and Regions’ plans for adaptation to climate change, their participation to climate Dmitigation frameworks (e.g. Climate Pacts), and initiatives to improve citizens’ well-being, biodiversity conservation and the protection of cultural heritage, in the context of smart cities, using innovative tools (e.g. Earth observation) and methodologies.
