DEDISA SA (Trans-Municipal Enterprise of Solid Waste Management) is the certified by the EWRA Waste Management Authority in the Prefecture of Chania, in the Region of Crete. The Prefecture of Chania has a population of ~ 155,000 permanent residents, which nearly doubles during the summer months due to increased tourism, it covers an area of ~ 2,400 km2. DEDISA SA employs 405 staff members (including 10% scientific personnel) and external consultants for specific scientific subjects.
Its responsibilities include:
• the managing and operation of the Ιntegrated Waste Management Facility comprising of a Mechanical Recycling & Composting facility and a Sanitary Landfill with a Leachate Treatment Unit.
- the collection and transportation of municipal solid waste, utilizing a fleet of vehicles equipped with GPS for route optimization,
- the collection and managing bulky waste and green waste,
- the collection of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment upon agreement,
- implementing source separation programs for recyclable materials and biowaste,
- operating a “door-to-door” collection program in the old town of Chania,
- information and raising public awareness.
The Integrated Waste Management Facility of Chania has been operating since the spring of 2005 and was the second municipal solid waste management facility that operated in the country. It currently manages more than 100,000 tones of waste on an annual basis. DEDISA SA has developed comprehensive awareness-raising programs targeting citizens, professionals, visitors, and youth, utilizing modern communication methods. It has also developed the digital platform “RE-USE by ΔΕΔΙΣΑ”, aimed at promoting the reuse of functional products to prevent them from becoming waste. At the same time, it participates in various programs aiming at innovation.
