ZeroPM (https://zeropm.eu/) is a 5-year research project funded by the H2020 programme, aiming to protect the environment and human health from per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) and other persistent pollutants. Within the framework of the project, two pilot plants have been constructed in Germany and Greece to investigate the removal of PFAS from drinking water and sewage sludge.

The German Water Institute (TZW/DVGW) has built a pilot system in Rastatt, Germany, which combines the use of granular activated carbon and ion-exchange resins to remove PFAS from groundwater in order to meet the requirements of European Directive 2020/2184.

The UNIVERSITY OF THE AEGEAN – DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENT has constructed and operated a pilot plant in Mytilene that achieves PFAS removal from sewage sludge at a rate exceeding 80% by combining anaerobic digestion with hydrothermal carbonization.
