The LABORATORY OF ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING AND MANAGEMENT (LEΕM) of the School of Chemical and Environmental Engineering is one of the oldest laboratories of the TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY OF CRETE, operating for over 30 years. The Director is Assistant Professor Alexandros Stefanakis, who serves as President of the International Ecological Engineering Society as well as Chair of the Specialist Unit on Constructed Wetlands for Water Pollution Control and Nature-Based Solutions of the International Water Association.

LEEM provides services and conducts research in the areas of water and wastewater treatment and reuse from different sources, with an emphasis on Ecological Engineering and the development of Nature-Based Solutions within the framework of the Circular Economy.

It is the body with the greatest accumulated knowledge and international experience in Greece on Constructed Wetlands for wastewater management, providing advanced design and techno-economic studies and research services.

We work on the production and application of biochar and compost for the valorization of organic (by-)products, while we offer water, wastewater and sludge quality characterization services, using state-of-the-art analytical equipment for the determination of various pollutants and parameters.
