The Prefecture of Chania has a population of ~ 155,000 permanent residents, which nearly doubles during the summer months due to increased tourism, it covers an area of ~ 2,400 km2.<\/p>\n<p><strong>DEDISA SA<\/strong> employs 340 staff members (including 10% scientific personnel) and external consultants for specific scientific subjects.<br \/>\nIts responsibilities include: The collection and transportation of municipal solid waste, utilizing a fleet of vehicles equipped with GPS for route optimization, managing bulky waste and green waste, implementing source separation programs for recyclable materials and biowaste, operating a \u201cdoor-to-door\u201d collection program in the old town of Chania, information and raising public awareness concerning waste prodaction and reuse, and the managing and operation of the \u0399ntegrated Waste Management Facility comprising of a Mechanical Recycling &amp; Composting facility and a Sanitary Landfill with a Leachate Treatment Unit.<\/p>\n<p>The Integrated Waste Management Facility in the Prefecture of Chania commenced its operation in the spring of 2005. The waste facility was upgraded and expanded in 2015 and 2019, managing to handle and process the generated waste in the Prefecture, ranging annually to 49,500 tons of mixed waste, 28,500 tons of pre-sorted recyclable waste, and 15,500 tons of biowaste. Throughout its presence, DEDISA SA has developed comprehensive awareness-raising programs targeting citizens, professionals, visitors, and youth, utilizing modern communication methods. It has also developed the digital platform \u201cRE-USE by dedisa\u201d, aimed at promoting the reuse of functional products to prevent them from becoming waste.
